On a stand at an İstanbul defense fair this spring, Türkiye showed a missile built to reach across continents. The Yıldırımhan, unveiled at the SAHA 2026 exhibition in early May, is what the Defense Ministry calls the country's first intercontinental ballistic missile, with a claimed range of 6,000 kilometers (3,700 miles). For now it is a model on a stand and a set of figures, and no test has yet put it in the air. The ambition it announces, though, is real, and the ministry says the program behind it has run for about a decade.
What was shown
The reveal came at the SAHA 2026 Defence and Aerospace Exhibition at the İstanbul Expo Center, where Defense Minister Yaşar Güler presented the Yıldırımhan alongside the rest of a fast-growing domestic arsenal. The ministry describes it as Türkiye's first liquid-fueled rocket missile and its longest-range weapon, burning nitrogen tetroxide and hydrazine, capable of Mach 25 and carrying a payload of up to 3,000 kilograms (6,600 pounds). The name carries the word yıldırım, thunderbolt.
The claim, and the gap
Those numbers would place Türkiye among the small group of states able to field an intercontinental missile. They are also, so far, the manufacturer's own figures. The Yıldırımhan was displayed as a mock-up. It has not been flight-tested, and outside analysts noted that several of its critical subsystems have not been publicly explained. The Defense Ministry says the system has finished laboratory testing and is moving toward ground testing; a flight test, reported to be staged from Somalia, remains further off. Until it flies, the 6,000-kilometer range is a design goal rather than a measured result, and defense trade press such as Breaking Defense wrote the figure up as "purported."
From the Tayfun to the Yıldırımhan
The leap is what makes the announcement striking. Türkiye's longest-range missile actually put through trials, the Tayfun, has reached about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles), in tests that ran through October 2025. A sixfold jump in range is a change of category. It demands re-entry vehicles and guidance over intercontinental distances that no Turkish system has yet demonstrated, a tier of engineering well beyond anything Ankara has flown.
Why Türkiye wants one
The reach for an ICBM fits a larger and familiar story: the drive to build at home what Türkiye once had to buy abroad. Arms embargoes, most memorably the American one after the 1974 Cyprus intervention, taught Ankara the cost of depending on other capitals' weapons, and successive governments have pushed for an industry that can meet nearly all of the country's needs. The stated target is near-total self-sufficiency by 2030. Armed drones, warships, a fifth-generation fighter and now a missile meant to cross continents are the showpieces of that project.
The nuclear question
An intercontinental missile is, classically, a tool of nuclear deterrence, and that is where the Yıldırımhan draws its sharpest questions. Türkiye is a non-nuclear-weapon state under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and nothing in the announcement pointed to a nuclear role. As a conventional strategic weapon an ICBM is an unusual and costly choice, which is part of why analysts have read the reveal as much a statement of intent and of standing as a finished capability.
So the Yıldırımhan sits, for now, between the stand and the silo. Türkiye has declared the ambition to build a missile that can reach across the world and has put a model of it on public display. Whether the hardware matches the figures is a question a test will settle, and Ankara says that test is coming.
