GENEVA

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday declared coronavirus “a global pandemic.”

At a news conference at WHO headquarters in Geneva, head of the UN health agency, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that over the past week, the number of COVID-19 cases outside China increased 13-fold, and tripled in the number of countries.

Now, he said, there were more than 118,000 cases in 114 countries, with more than 900 people in intensive care in Italy alone.

“This is the first pandemic caused by a coronavirus,” Tedros added.
