At least 9,761 people in Africa were diagnosed positive for coronavirus in one day, said the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday.
According to the latest update, the total number of cases in the continent has now reached 251,866. Recoveries also grew by 4,331 in the last 24 hours to 114,308.
The tally for fatalities went up to 6,769 after 305 virus-linked deaths registered across Africa.
South Africa has the highest number of cases that now stand at 73,600, while Egypt follows with 46,300.
In terms of death toll, however, Egypt suffered 1,700 and South Africa 1,600.
Nigeria in West Africa recorded 424 fatalities, Sudan in East Africa 468, and Cameroon in Central Africa 277.
Of the five geographical regions of the continent, Southern Africa registered 77,200 cases, North Africa 69,700, West Africa 52,500, East Africa 27,400 and Central Africa 25,100.
EU supports Ethiopia, IGAD
Meanwhile, the European Union and its member states (Team Europe) said they mobilized €487 million in support of Ethiopia’s COVID-19 response effort.
The EU Addis Ababa office said in a statement that the money would go into Ethiopian health system and quarantine sites, social protection enhancement, livelihood recovery and significant support in its overall economic response to the crisis.
Ethiopia, which grapples with a fast rate of infections due to community spread, has registered 3,521 cases and 60 deaths thus far.
Meanwhile, the EU said it also provided €60 million to Intergovernmental Authority on Development, an 8-nation security and trading bloc of East Africa, for virus response programs.
