NEW DELHI, India
Dozens of people are feared trapped after a five-story building collapsed in western India, a senior official said Monday.
The incident happened in the Raigad district of the Maharashtra state.
“There are 50-60 people likely trapped in the debris. 15 people have been rescued so far,” Nidhi Chaudhari, the district collector, told Anadolu Agency over the phone.
No deaths have been reported so far, Chaudhari said.
Several parts of Maharashtra are witnessing monsoon rains, but it was not immediately clear if the building collapsed due to the rains.
Indian Home Minister Amit Shah said that he had spoken to the head of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) about the incident.
“The collapse of a building in Raigad, Maharashtra is very tragic. Have spoken to DG @NDRFHQ to provide all possible assistance, teams are on the way and will be assisting with the rescue operations as soon as possible. Praying for everyone’s safety,” Shah tweeted.
