Brazil has recorded 888 more fatalities from the novel coronavirus, raising the country’s death toll to 18,859, health officials said Thursday.

There have also been 19,954 new cases registered over the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 291,579, according to the Health Ministry.

The tally of recoveries has stood at 116,683.

After originating in China last December, COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, has spread to at least 188 countries and regions, with Europe and the US currently the worst hit.

The pandemic has killed more than 328,000 people worldwide, with some 5 million confirmed cases and nearly 1.9 million recoveries, according to figures compiled by the US’ Johns Hopkins University.

As death toll nears 19,000, Brazil is the world’s third country hit by coronavirus worst.
