ANKARA - The last hijacking in Turkey was experienced on March 15, 2001 when a plane en route from Istanbul to Moscow of Russian Vmukova company was hijacked.
Hijacked planes belonging to several airlines and dates of hijacking are as follows:
-May 3, 1972: THY plane en route from Ankara to Istanbul named ''Bogazici'' was hijacked by four Turkish people. The plane was directed to Sofia. Hijackers wanted Deniz Gezmis and his friends to be released. There were second president of Turkey, Ismet Inonu, and his son Omer Inonu aboard the plane.
-October 22, 1972: THY plane en route from Istanbul to Ankara named ''Truva'' was hijacked by four Turkish people. The plane was directed to Sofia.
-May 1, 1976: a Turkish citizen named Zeki Ejder wanted to hijack plane named ''Izmir'' en route from Paris to Istanbul. Ejder wanted the plane to direct to Marseilles.
-February 13, 1977: A plane named ''Trakya'' flying from Istanbul to Izmir was wanted to be hijacked to Belgrade by a police college student Adnan Mintas.
-March 19, 1977: A THY plane from Diyarbakir to Ankara was hijacked to Beirut. Two hijackers surrendered to police.
-October 13, 1980: A THY Boeing 727 plane named ''Diyarbakir'' en route from Munich to Istanbul was hijacked to Diyarbakir by four people. The hijackers were later captured.
-May 24, 1981: A DC-9 plane named ''Halic'' was hijacked to Burgaz by four people when flying from Istanbul to Ankara.
-April 15, 1983: Plane en route from Istanbul to western Izmir province named ''Ankara'' was hijacked by a mentally ill Turk. The plane was directed to Athens. There were 107 passengers aboard the plane.
-June 28, 1985: Plane from Frankfurt to Istanbul was tried to be hijacked by a Turkish citizen named Yusuf Orer who was deported from Germany. The plane named ''Kars'' was tried to be headed for Vienna. The hijacker was rendered ineffective by the crew members with the help of the passengers.
-March 8, 1996: A Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Airlines Boeing 727 plane from Lefkosa to Istanbul was hijacked by a person named Ranazan Aydin and was directed to Munich.
-June 9, 1997: Maltese Airlines plane en route from Le Valetta to Istanbul was hijacked by Ismail Beyazpinar and Nusret Akmercan and taken to Cologne.
-February 24, 1998: THY RJ 100 plane named ''Gaziantep'' en route from Adana to Ankara was hijacked by Mehmet Dag and headed towards Diyarbakir. There were 63 passengers and five crew members aboard the plane.
Dag, who said that there was a bomb hidden in a teddy bear in his hand, wanted to go to Iran but he was rendered ineffective by the passengers.
-March 30, 1998: TRNC plane flying from Lefkosa to Ankara was hijacked by Mehmet Erturk by a lighter in the shape of a hand grenade. The plane landed at Ankara's Esenboga Airport and Erturk was captured.
-September 14, 1998: Airbus plane flying from Ankara to Istanbul was hijacked and then, the plane landed at Trabzon Airport.
-October 29, 1998: Boeing 737 plane named ''Ayvalik'' en route from Ankara to Istanbul was hijacked.
-March 15, 2001: A plane belonging to Russian ''Vmukova'' company flying from Istanbul to Moscow was hijacked. The hijack was ended by an operation staged in Medina by Saudi officials. Three people, including a Turk died in the operation.
