SERIOUS MISTAKE
A Turkish Airlines (THY) plane took off from Istanbul at 10.00 p.m. with 196 passengers including two babies and 9 crew members aboard. A person, who claimed that he was carrying explosives, hijacked the plane. He entered the cockpit and forced pilots to divert the plane to Germany. The plane landed at Greek capital Athens for refueling. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a telephone conversation with the hijacker through cell phone of deputy Turan Comez. Erdogan persuaded the hijacker to release the passengers. Sources said that pilots made a serious mistake by leaving door of the cockpit open.

CAVE COLLAPSES KILLING ONE PERSON
Caves in Aydinbaba neighborhood in southeastern province of Gaziantep collapsed due to torrential rains. Five houses, which were built on the caves, razed to the ground. One person died in the incident while four others were injured.

RE-TRIAL OF FORMER DEP DEPUTIES STARTS
Re-trial of Leyla Zana, Hatip Dicle, Orhan Dogan and Selim Sadak, the former deputies of the banned Democracy Party (DEP), started at the Ankara State Security Court (DGM) no: 1. The court delegation rejected request of the suspects for release from prison. The second hearing will be held in April.

MISSILE PARTS FALL TO SANLIURFA
The Sanliurfa Governor's Office said that substances which were believed to have been parts of a missile fell to Buyukmurdes hamlet in Dagyani village in southeastern province of Sanliurfa. Gendarme teams carried out an investigation in the area and found substances which were believed to have been parts of a missile which did not detonate. There were four main pieces spread to an area of nearly 1 square kilometer, officials said. Gendarme teams set up a security line and did not allow anybody to enter the area. Two missiles had fallen to rurals of Ozveren village and Viransehir village of Sanliurfa on March 23.

NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN TURKEY AND UNITED STATES TO RESTART
Negotiations between Turkey and the United States about Turkey's sending soldiers to northern Iraq will restart today after a three-day interval. U.S. President George W. Bush's Special Envoy to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad will hold talks with Ministry of Foreign Affairs Deputy Undersecretary Ali Tuygan. Meanwhile, a coordination meeting will be held in Silopi town of southeastern province of Sirnak next week with the participation of Turkish and U.S. officials and representatives of Kurdish and Turkmen groups in northern Iraq.

NSC CONVENES
The National Security Council (NSC) convened yesterday under the chairmanship of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended the meeting for the first time. The statement, which was released at the end of the meeting, called on the United States to take urgent measures about northern Iraq. ''If the United States does not take measures, Turkey will take them,'' the statement noted. The statement said, ''it is clear that Turkey will not refrain from taking necessary steps against possible threat of terrorism which may stem from PKK-KADEK.''

EXPORTS INCREASE BY 13.4 PERCENT
Turkey exported goods of 2 billion 959.6 million U.S. dollars and imported goods of 4 billion 40 million U.S. dollars in January of 2003. The State Institute of Statistics (DIE) announced that exports increased by 13.4 percent and imports rose by 19.4 percent. Foreign trade deficit climbed 39.5 percent to 1 billion 80.8 million U.S. dollars.

NSC: ''END THE WAR IN IRAQ''
The National Security Council (NSC) convened under the chairmanship of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. During the meeting, the NSC called on both the United States and Britain to put an end to the military action against Iraq in order to prevent more casualties. Referring to red lines regarded with Turkey's interests and security in northern Iraq, the NSC stressed that the United States should take urgent measures.

DEP CASE RESTARTS
Re-trial process of Leyla Zana, Hatip Dicle, Orhan Dogan and Selim Sadak, the former deputies of the banned Democracy Party (DEP), started at Ankara State Security Court (DGM) no: 1. During the first hearing, the suspects claimed that they were not separatists. The suspects defended that they had expended efforts for friendship between Turkish and Kurdish peoples.

NEW INITIATIVE FOR A SOLUTION IN CYPRUS
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that they had launched a new initiative in order to find a solution to the Cyprus question. Erdogan said, ''Turkey, Greece, Britain and the two sides in the island should come together and find a peaceful solution.''

DENKTAS: ''I HOPE THAT NEW INITIATIVE WILL COME TO A CONCLUSION''
President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said about Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's new initiative aiming at finding a peaceful solution to the Cyprus question, ''I hope that this initiative will come to a conclusion.''

UNITED STATES ASSURES TURKEY
U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said that the U.S. administration had assured Turkey that presence of U.S. military troops in northern Iraq aimed at protecting territorial integrity of Iraq.

PRESIDENT SEZER RETURNS LAW REGARDED WITH RETIREMENT AGE
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer returned the law to the Parliament, which decreased obligatory retirement age of civil servants from 65 to 61, to be debated once again. Presidential Press Center issued a statement and said President Sezer returned the law to the Parliament under Articles 89 and 104 of the Constitution.

INCIRLIK GETS INTO ACTION
The Incirlik Airbase in Yuregir town of southern province of Adana got into action. Doors of hangars in the airbase started to be opened one by one. Six F-15 planes left their hangars and took off from the airbase. Later, six F-16 planes took off from the airbase, and those six F-15 planes returned. Meanwhile, two cargo planes and a tanker plane landed at the airbase at midnight. Nearly two hours later, they took off from the airbase.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME TO START ON MARCH 30
Daylight saving time will start at 1.00 a.m. on March 30, 2003 in order to save energy. The standard time will be set forward by one hour at 1.00 a.m. The daylight saving time will end at 2.00 a.m. on October 26, 2003. A total of five billion 594.7 kilowatt-hour of electric energy has been saved in Turkey since 1990 due to daylight saving time practice. Turkey aims at saving 580 million kilowatt-hour of electric energy in 2003.
