DECISION DAY
After the government delayed the motion on deployment of foreign soldiers in Turkey and dispatch of Turkish soldiers abroad, the meeting of National Security Council (NSC) was held in a critical atmosphere. The meeting lasted for four and a half hours. Military officials gave the message that ''we won't assume an attitude which will affect the will of the parliament''. Military wing of the NSC said that they got prepared for a possible attack against Iraq and added that the parliament would take the decision regarding the issue.

ANNAN SAYS IF LEADERS DON'T REACH AGREEMENT ON ISSUE ON MARCH 10, EFFORTS FOR SOLUTION WILL END
U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said that if the two leaders do not reach agreement on the issue on March 10, efforts for peace will end. Annan came together with President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and newly-elected Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos at a U.N. compound in Lefkosa's U.N.-manned buffer zone on Friday. Annan who asked at Thursday's meeting the two leaders to give their response verbally, invited them to The Hague on March 10, and he asked them to state whether or not they would accept referendum even if an agreement was not signed.

UNITED STATES NOT TAKING BACKWARD STEP
The United States which is putting pressure on Turkey regarding the passing of the motion from the parliament does not take a backward step regarding the issue of International Monetary Fund (IMF). The United States insists that IMF will supervise and control the source which will be given to Turkey. The United States claims that IMF should supervise the source, since loans which were earlier given to Turkey were not used fruitfully.

DEMONSTRATORS PROTEST ERDOGAN
A group of people who gathered in Beyazit Square in Istanbul after Friday prayers held a ''no to war'' demonstration and protested Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Demonstrators who burnt flags of Israel and the United States chanted slogans, ''Erdogan ended our patience''.

TURKEY ON ALERT
With the historical voting in the parliament today, the war process will officially start. The U.S. will transfer soldiers and weapons to ports and bases of Turkey. Today all the eyes of the people in Turkey are on the parliament. The majority of the AK Party deputies are expected to vote for the motion.

NO RECOMMENDATION FROM NSC
No recommendatory decision was taken about the motion that is expected to be adopted by the parliament today about deployment of foreign soldiers in Turkey and sending soldiers abroad, in the National Security Council (NSC) meeting yesterday. NSC issued a statement after the meeting saying that the results of the negotiations with the U.S. regarding the possible intervention of the U.S. in Iraq was assessed in the meeting.

DEMONSTRATION TO BE HELD IN ANKARA
Peace lovers in Turkey will come together in Ankara today to hold a demonstration to protest a possible intervention of the U.S. in Iraq. Tight security measures were taken for the demonstration which will be held in Sihhiye district of Ankara. The demonstration will be held upon the initiative of non-governmental organizations namely DISK, KESK, TMMOB and Turkish Doctors Union. Anti-war platforms in other cities also support the demonstration in Ankara.

NSC LEAVES MOTION TO PARLIAMENT
No expression was used in the statement of the National Security Council statement about the voting of the motion which would take place in the parliament today. In fact the AK Party government had postponed the voting of the motion saying that it had to be taken up at the NSC meeting once again. Regarding the Cyprus issue, attendees in NSC defended the view that Turkey could not accept a time pressure.

GOVERNMENT DOES NOT GET SUPPORT OF NSC
The government which wanted to share responsibility of the motion on deployment of foreign soldiers in Turkey and dispatch of Turkish soldiers abroad with the National Security Council (NSC) could not get support of the NSC. Results, which were reached at negotiations between Turkey and the United States about a possible U.S.-led military action against Iraq, were assessed, but the motion was not taken up during monthly meeting of the NSC. NSC gave the message that the government will take the final political decision regarding the motion and that the will of the parliament is superior to everything.

DGM ACCEPTS REQUESTS OF FORMER DEPUTIES OF DEP FOR RE-TRIAL
Ankara State Security Court (DGM) no: 1 decided to accept requests of former deputies of the Democracy Party (DEP), which was banned by the Constitutional Court, for re-trial. The court accepted in majority the re-trial request of Hatip Dicle and Leyla Zana, the former deputies of the DEP from Diyarbakir province, and Orhan Dogan and Selim Sadak, the former deputies of the DEP from Sirnak province. The court rejected request of Zana, Dicle, Dogan and Sadak for release from prison.

TURKEY TO BE IN POST-WAR DECISION TAKING MECHANISM
Turkey made the U.S. administration accept all of its military demands. During a possible intervention in Iraq, Turkey can stage land and air operations against the PKK terrorist organization if it wishes in the north of Iraq. Besides the Turkish war planes can have flights to watch the region if necessary. Only those countries which take part in the operation can take part in the reconstruction of Iraq after the war. According to the compromise reached with the U.S., Turkey will be represented in all dimensions of the political formation stages of Iraq after the war.

MARCH 10 IS LAST CHANCE
U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan announced that TRNC President Rauf Denktas and Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos accepted to meet in the Hague on March 10. ''If one party or the other says no on March 10 there is no doubt that this is the end of road. We put lots of efforts in it the plan and I'm not sure this opportunity will come again soon. If it ever comes again,''Annan said.

ERDOGAN ADDRESSES CROWD IN SIIRT WEARING BULLETPROOF JACKET
Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan came together with the people in eastern Siirt province on Friday. Erdogan wore bulletproof jacket before addressing the crowd in Siirt. Erdogan called the people to vote for his party. Erdogan who could not take part in the election which was held on November 3, 2002 addressed the people in Siirt as a deputy candidate. He said that nobody who had common sense wanted war, adding that however Turkey had to think about the damage such a possible war would cause.
