ANKARA - Prime Minister Abdullah Gul spoke by telephone with the U.S. State Secretary Colin Powell on Wednesday.
Prime Ministry Press Center issued a written statement and said the telephone talk took place upon the request of Powell.
The statement said the Gul and Powell took up ongoing negotiations between Turkey and the United States pertaining to Iraqi problem, and which came to a specific stage following contacts of State Minister Ali Babacan and Foreign Minister Yasar Yakis in Washington.
The statement said Gul and Powell also discussed activities carried out in the U.N. on Iraqi issue, and results of the EU summit held in Brussels between February 17 and 18 for the candidate countries. The statement said military negotiations between Turkey and the United States were underway in Ankara.
The statement said economic and political consultations were carried out through the embassies of the two countries.
