Ankara Pleased With Consensus In Nato

ANKARA - Ankara was pleased with the consensus on Article 4 of North Atlantic Treaty.
Diplomatic sources said that Ankara decided that NATO met Turkey's demands which were protection against chemical weapons, Patriot missiles and AWACS (airborne warning and control system) aircrafts in case of a possible operation against Iraq.
The decision which was taken with a consensus under the auspices of NATO Defense Planning Committee (DPC) on Sunday night put into effect Article 4 of North Atlantic Treaty officially.
Agreements which were made bilaterally with Netherlands and some other countries will be included under the auspices of Organization. Turkish Parliament will not have to give a separate decision concerning this issue.
Meanwhile, plans on Turkey's protection against chemical weapons and sending Patriot missiles and AWACS aircrafts to Turkey are completed and they are being carried out.
Patriot missiles are expected to be in Turkey earliest in 20 and latest in 30 days. Turkish military officials will determine in which regions AWACS aircrafts and Patriots will be deployed.
Meanwhile, as no personnel can use Patriot missiles in Turkey, NATO will provide this personnel. Foreign Ministry is investigating whether a permission should be taken from Parliament for the personnel.
