NEW YORK - United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan called President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot administration leader Glafcos Clerides on the phone on Thursday and informed them on his scheduled visit to Cyprus.
Annan's Spokesman Fred Eckhard said that Special Envoy to Cyprus Alvaro de Soto had briefed Annan on latest developments about Cyprus question.
Later, Annan called President Denktas and Clerides on the phone and told them he wanted to pay a visit to Cyprus.
Eckhard said that Annan would pay a visit to the region in the last week of February to make a contribution to efforts of the sides to reach an agreement till the end of the month.
He said that Annan planned to start his tour to Ankara, Athens and Cyprus on February 24.
Eckhard noted that De Soto would return to Cyprus to attend the meeting between President Denktas and Clerides on Friday.
