LEFKOSA - President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan would visit Cyprus for a ''final and unacceptable pressure'' stating that, ''he may put forth a third plan if he fails to get what he wants''.
Speaking at a program broadcast in TRT 2, Denktas said he knew that Annan would visit Turkey and Greece, but that he did not know whether or not he would visit Cyprus.
Denktas said Annan could pay a visit to Turkey by basing on the view of Cyprus Special Envoy Alvaro De Soto in which he said, ''both sides approach each other very much. It is very possible that the two sides may agree. However, Turkey should put some pressure on Denktas and make him accept this or not, thus the problem can be solved.''
Denktas said Alvaro De Soto, in one of his interviews, pointed out that ''Denktas would not offend Turkey, he would accept everything if Turkey puts pressure.'' Denktas said, ''it is very meaningful that he made this statement after having contacts in Turkey. I don't know with whom he had contacts. We heard that he had talks with some people apart from the government. We don't know whatever those people told him. I think what they expect from Turkey with this statement is to make Turkey put pressure on Turkish Cypriots to accept a plan to make around 60,000 Turkish Cypriots leave their places and accept 60,000 Greek Cypriots. I think he comes with this view, I hope I will be mistaken.''
Responding to a question that Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides linked his hopes to Turkey, Denktas said Clerides would see that he was mistaken. Denktas said Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan said sovereignty of Turkish Cypriots was a must, and that the map was unacceptable.
Pointing out that Greek Cypriots were always living in dream and created a world by themselves, Denktas said, ''there is something which they don't know. That is the Turkish Nation. We know that Turkish nation will not allow this. However, the Greek Cypriots don't know Turkish people and Turkey.''
Denktas said the U.N. Secretary General should be asked how he would make 50-60 thousand Turkish Cypriots leave their places.
Stating that there was a plan in front of them which is more complex than 1960, Denktas said the Greek Cypriots, who had said 1960's plan was very complex and would not work, sooner or later would also disrupt the new plan. Asking if Turkey enters the EU territory then, Denktas said the biggest mistake was to link good will mission of the U.N. Secretary General to the EU timetable. He said this lifted the opportunities that existed.
Pointing out that people were being instilled that Loizidou cases would increase in case an agreement would not be signed on February 28, Denktas said those files would also be opened even though there was an agreement. Denktas stated that around 60 thousand Greek Cypriots would come to the Turkish Cypriot side in case there was an agreement, and that this time the Greek Cypriots who could not come would open files.
Denktas said they wanted a result which complies with rights, justice and facts, stating that they also wanted the two former partners to make a partnership based on sovereign basis.
Denktas said Clerides also stated that there would not be an agreement till February 28, adding that it was also important who would win the elections in Greek Cypriot side.
Denktas said Clerides would continue ''let us continue'' game in case he wins, and noted that, ''they will give time and we will continue. If there is the possibility for compromise, let us continue. However, I should know if you will say no to everything I say.''
