Weston And Khalilzad Hold Contacts At Ministry Of Foreign Affairs

ANKARA - Thomas Weston, the special coordinator of the U.S. State Department for Cyprus, said on Thursday that steps had accelerated about the Cyprus question and added that time was running out.
Weston, who held contacts with Ministry of Foreign Affairs Cyprus Department officials and Undersecretary Ugur Ziyal, told reporters that they had held one of the consultation meetings between Turkey and the United States.
Noting that steps had accelerated about the Cyprus question and that time was running out, Weston said that he had held very positive meetings with Turkish officials.
Responding a question about United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan's invitation to Turkey and Greece to reach a compromise on the issue of security under efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus question, Weston said that there were some decisions that could be taken only by guarantor states.
Noting that the United States might support such a dialogue, Weston said that they had been expending efforts to find a fair solution and an influential compromise in Cyprus.
Meanwhile, U.S. President George Bush's adviser for Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad met with Ministry of Foreign Affairs Deputy Undersecretary Ali Tuygan.
He refrained from responding questions of reporters.
