LEFKOSA - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas said on Wednesday that his meeting with Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides was tough.
Following the meeting, Denktas told reporters that the Greek Cypriot administration expressed their views about ''sine qua nons'' of the Turkish side in writing instead of bringing their document on ''sine qua nons'' to the meeting.
Denktas said that they could not discuss the map at their meeting.
He wanted to inform TRNC parliament about the point reached in talks on Thursday if it was suitable for the parliament, Denktas noted.
Denktas said that he would meet with Clerides on Monday but there would not be a meeting on Wednesday due to the Feast of Sacrifice.
A meeting would be held at 5.00 p.m. on Friday, the last day of the feast, Denktas noted.
When a reporter reminded that ''he had earlier stated that he would call the parliament for a meeting if there was a bottleneck,'' Denktas said, ''I didn't say bottleneck. I will inform the parliament about their response to our sine qua nons and their sine qua nons.''
''They are rigid about our sine qua non conditions. Everybody has to think if we can adopt the plan without any changes,'' Denktas said.
Denktas stated that the Greek Cypriots rejected all demands of the Turkish side for a change in the plan and that the Greek Cypriots were relieved about going on their path as ''the republic of Cyprus.''
''They should be reminded that TRNC does not exist in this 'republic of Cyprus.' It will be their own decision. Is it an honor to take a half Cyprus to the European Union (EU)? Is it a success or a victory? Or will they assume a reasonable approach under the light of the incidents which have occurred since 1963 and which has divided Cyprus into two? As far as I see, they don't have such an intention,'' Denktas said.
Denktas underlined that it was very dangerous for the Turkish Cypriots to make an agreement which could be considered differently by different parties.
They wanted frankness, Denktas said.
Denktas added, ''the only reason of the incidents which occurred in 1960 and 1963 is that they acted according to their own ideas with their own method by saying that 'we think so.' They can act similarly again. It is an agreement on paper. They can act so again. We will be weaker against them this time. We have to be more careful.''
