Denktas: We Will Not Give Karpaz And Guzelyurt

LEFKOSA - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas said on Tuesday that they were not giving and would never give Karpaz and Guzelyurt.
Denktas, who received a delegation of Turkish Cypriot Association of Physicians, said that it was not possible for them to accept United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan for Cyprus in its current shape even if their people consented to it.
Although they presented a proposal for a change in the plan, the Greek Cypriots only came to the negotiation table with territory demand and continued their insistence on Karpaz and Guzelyurt, Denktas noted.
Denktas said, ''neither we nor Turkey accept this. We are not giving and will never give Karpaz and Guzelyurt. This map is contrary to humanity in its current shape.''
He would not sign the plan if he did not approve it in case his people wanted it to be signed, Denktas noted.
Denktas stated that it was not possible for him to accept the current shape of the plan which did not foresaw bi-zonality and political equality, which foresaw migration of thousands of people, which limited Turkish side in a narrow territory, and which diluted guarantees.
Some rights foreseen in the plan would be totally removed with the norms of the European Union (EU), Denktas pointed out. He said that Turks would be in the position of minority in the island.
Denktas stressed that funds and projects were not foreseen for Turks who would be in the position of migrants.
Issue of migrants could be solved only with political decision instead of creating new migrants, Denktas said.
Denktas noted that they voiced their demands about that issue for years.
They were taking joint action with Turkey during the negotiation process, Denktas said.
Denktas pointed out that they continued their negotiations by taking into consideration decisions of the National Security Council (NSC).
Main expectations and objections regarding Annan's plan were set with the consent of Turkey, Denktas said.
Denktas defined ''schedule'' foreseen in the plan as artificial and noted that indexing solution of Cyprus issue on the EU was wrong.
''U.N. Secretary General should not have been affected with this schedule. He was defeated and the EU membership was regarded as settlement of Cyprus issue. In fact, Cyprus issue had to be settled for EU membership. It is a big intrigue to handle these two issues together,'' Denktas said.
Denktas noted, ''February 28 can go by. There is so much time. There is nothing like we will lose our chance to join the EU. They want whole Cyprus. Then, they have to regard Turkish Cypriots as an interlocutor. They have to talk to the state and government.''
The Turkish Cypriots would continue their lives if an agreement was not reached, Denktas said.
Denktas added that TRNC and Turkish governments were working on a radical plan which foresaw money inflow in order to increase level of welfare of Turkish Cypriots.
