Gul: We Will Launch A Last Initiative For A Peaceful Solution

ANKARA - Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said on Monday that they would launch a last initiative for a peaceful solution in Iraq.
During his meeting with Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal, Prime Minister Gul said that they had resorted to all diplomatic methods to prevent a possible war.
He stressed that they had still been trying to convince Iraq.
Noting that they would launch a last initiative for a peaceful solution in Iraq, Prime Minister Gul said, ''we have tried all methods including a summit meeting to be held in one of Arab countries. Unfortunately, we have been approaching to a possible war. Turkey has taken significant steps to find a peaceful solution to the Iraq issue. However, Iraqi government did not take seriously these calls and the emerging jeopardy.''
''Turkey cannot be involved in an active war. However, we can undertake important functions and missions in Northern Iraq. The government will apply to the parliament to seek authority. We plan to submit the decree including permission to installation of technical equipment in bases, deployment of foreign soldiers in Turkey and dispatch of Turkish soldiers abroad till February 5 when the United States will present its evidence to the United Nations Security Council,'' he added.
