Oymen: Government Should Await U.N. Security Council Resolution

IZMIR - Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Commission member and Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy Onur Oymen said on Monday that the government should await United Nations (U.N.) Security Council resolution before getting authority from parliament regarding Iraqi issue.
Delivering a speech on developments in Turkish foreign policy, Oymen said that U.N. weapons inspectors could not find mass destructive weapons in Iraq and noted, ''we cannot say yes to a military intervention with these reports of the inspectors.''
The United States called on the U.N. Security Council for an extraordinary meeting on February 5 and announced that it would give new information, Oymen stated.
Oymen said, ''why didn't the United States give this information before January 27? Why is it giving information now? Why doesn't it share the information with NATO members? The United States is pressing on us and asking us to make our decision as soon as possible. The government is panicking and it will submit a decree on permission of technical equipment in bases, deployment of foreign soldiers in Turkey and dispatch of Turkish soldiers abroad.''
''The government, which will ask for authority from parliament, should await U.N. Security Council resolution. Because, France and Germany will do so. We have to regard legitimacy within terms of our Constitution. The government should not hurry,'' Oymen added.
