Security Forces Detain 20 Demonstrators

ANKARA - Security forces did not allow members of the Democrat Youth Platform, who wanted to hold an anti-militarist demonstration to protest a possible military operation of the United States against Iraq, in southeastern province of Diyarbakir on Monday.
When the group insisted on holding the demonstration by chanting slogans, security forces intervened in the group and detained nearly 20 demonstrators including officials of the Democratic People's Party (DEHAP).
Meanwhile, a campaign has been launched in eastern province of Elazig to collect signatures against a possible military operation of the United States against Iraq.
Freedom and Solidarity Party (ODP) Provincial Chairman Cenan Ulgun said that the ODP had launched an anti-militarist campaign throughout Turkey.
Ulgen added that a rally would be held in Ankara on March 1 to protest a possible war in Iraq.
