LEFKOSA - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas said on Thursday that United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan's Special Envoy to Cyprus Alvaro De Soto ''behaved shamefully if he said during his contacts in Ankara that 'Denktas was not negotiating'.''
Responding to questions of reporters, Denktas said that there were news that De Soto stated that ''Denktas was not negotiating and sitting at the table'' during his meeting with Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.
Denktas noted that De Soto ''behaved shamefully if he said so'' and that they would ask De Soto this issue.
TRNC President Denktas defined the statement of European Union (EU) Commissioner for enlargement Guenter Verheugen that ''there would not be any possibility of a negotiation and agreement in Cyprus after EU accession agreement was signed'' as a ''pressure and threat.''
Verheugen did not know about Cyprus issue and was a person blocking the talks, Denktas said.
Denktas noted, ''Verheugen has already made a decision: 'the Greek Cypriots are the legitimate Cyprus and we are minority.' He continuously gives this message to the Greek Cypriots. When we started the talks, he gave a message that 'Cyprus would be a member whether or not an agreement was reached' and blocked the negotiations.''
''We don't understand why he is behaving so. But, we are aware that he doesn't know rights of Turkish Cypriots and what Cyprus issue is. We are writing with good will, we are explaining but he doesn't intent to understand. His last statement is a threat and pressure. We expect right and justice and neutrality from the EU but it is not possible because they have totally become a side to Cyprus issue. We want an agreement under equal conditions to block their course,'' Denktas added.
