LEFKOSA - TRNC President Rauf Denktas said on Wednesday that the negotiations for amendments in Annan plan in order to make the principles of TRNC be accepted, continued.
''I don't know if we will be successful or not, but we walk on this road together with Turkey. If the document can be signed on February 28, we will definitely sign it,'' Denktas said in his meeting with members of the European Turkish Solidarity Council and National Olympic Games Committee.
Denktas said that ''if the Greek Cypriots don't accept the proposals of TRNC, it is not possible to sign Annan plan. Yet this is not the end of the world. Efforts will certainly continue for the solution of Cyprus issue. European Union will continue to be interested in Cyprus issue in order to make the whole Cyprus be its member.''
Denktas said that Turkey started to plan the new initiatives, new aid and new investments it will undertake in TRNC if an agreement was not signed, adding that ''we are not worried in this respect.''
Noting that two peoples lived in Cyprus, Denktas said that in case of a possible agreement on the island, the two states should have sports on their own. Denktas said that Turkish Cypriots also wanted to compete in sports in equal conditions like in all fields, adding that the proposal of the Greek Cypriots was like the ''match between the wardens and inmates.'' Denktas stressed that the National Olympic Games Committee in Turkey should help in overcoming the sports embargo that continued for 40 years.
DENKTAS MEETS WITH CLERIDES
Denktas and Clerides met at Ledra Palace Hotel in bufferzone on Wednesday.
Prior to the meeting, Denktas told reporters that anthrax alarm was given in the place where they had formerly met.
Denktas said that preliminary tests disproved occurrence of anthrax there and that the person or persons who made that ugly joke created excitement.
Turkish side proposed a change in United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan for Cyprus, Denktas noted.
Denktas added, ''I guess the Greek Cypriots will give a response to this proposal now or they will present us their proposal. We will see.''
