LEFKOSA - British Special Envoy to Cyprus Lord David Hannay met on Monday with officials of political parties represented in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Parliament.
Suha Turkoz, the Secretary General of National Unity Party (UBP), UBP deputy Ilker Nevzat, Democrat Party (DP) leader and Tourism and Environment Minister Serdar Denktas, Communal Liberation Party (TKP) leader Huseyin Angolemli and Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Mehmet Ali Talat attended the meeting.
Following his contacts, Hannay told reporters that he was ''encouraged'' by both political and technical work.
Serdar Denktas said that he expressed his views about United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan for Cyprus during the meeting and noted, ''it seems that they think that change in some of the articles which we consider a problem will not cause a serious problem. We will see it in a few weeks.''
Turkoz said that they once more informed Hannay about the issues over which they felt concern in Annan's plan.
''We especially voiced our uneasiness about issues like immigration, property, method of elections, and initiatives related with the European Union,'' Turkoz noted.
Turkoz said that they requested Hannay to express those concerns in different levels.
Hannay, who wrapped up his contacts in the island, issued a statement in which he said that he was encouraged by both political and technical work.
Reaching a compromise on a changed plan would contribute to a significant political will and effort, Hannay noted.
Hannay said that the British government called on all relevant parties to show that will.
His visit to Cyprus was the indicator of ongoing determination of the British government, as a EU and U.N. Security Council member, about extending every kind of assistance to both of the parties in order to reach a comprehensive solution till February 28, Hannay pointed out.
Hannay said that he also visited Athens and met with Greek Foreign Minister, adding that he would pay a visit to Ankara in the following week.
