VAN - Refugees who were waiting in eastern Van province to be sent to a third country staged on Monday demonstration in front of Van office of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
A total of 250 Iranians and Iraqis who were living in Van as refugees demanded to meet with officials of UNHCR Van office as the decision for being sent to a third country was delayed.
Carolyn Ennis, an official at the Van bureau of UNHCR who met with four representative refugees, told A.A. correspondent that they would convey the problems of refugees to Ankara and would meet with the representatives of refugees again the following week.
Noting that she did not know the source of problems of refugees, Ennis said that there were different reasons of the delay. She added that people who fled from Iran to Iraq came to Turkey. She said that people who arrive in Turkey were under the protection of UNHCR and they provided all legal assistance to them.
Refugees dispersed after their meeting with UNHCR officials.
