GET READY FOR MONETARY UNION
Ernst Welteke, the Governor of German Central Bank said that EU candidate countries including Turkey should work to reach the standards of European Monetary Union. Speaking in Davos, Welteke said that all countries had to take serious measures to ensure monetary union. Underlining that Turkey undertook important economic reforms, Welteke said that Turkey should start efforts to abide by EU monetary standards.

IMPORTANT QUESTION ASKED TO TURKISH JOURNALIST IN DAVOS
A Turkish night was organized in the sidelines of World Economic Forum that was held in Davos, Switzerland. The wifes of ministers attended the night by wearing head scarves. During the party, a French journalist Arlette Chabot asked Turkish woman journalist Gila Benmayor when she would start to wear head scarf.

NO TIME LEFT
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said in Davos to journalists that the time was running out in Iraq and that a war was likely. When asked his views about the cooperation between Turkey and the U.S., Powell said that ''we are pleased with it. Turkey is a great friend. We helped Turkey a lot in the past, particularly we extended economic support to it.''

BE CAREFUL TO THIS VISIT
Land Forces Commander Gen. Aytac Yalman will be in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) today. The visit takes place in a period in which the tension between AK Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan and TRNC President Rauf Denktas escalated. This visit will take place in order to reveal once again the attitude of the military about TRNC and to extend support to TRNC President Rauf Denktas. During his visit to TRNC, very important messages can be given.

IMF ASKS TURKEY TO BE QUICK
AK Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with a high ranking official from IMF for the first time. IMF First Deputy Managing Director Anne Krueger had a 45-minute meeting with Erdogan and State Minister in charge of Treasury Ali Babacan in the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. Krueger told reporters after the meeting that she gave the message to Erdogan and Babacan that the government had to be quick, adding that the internal and external markets were waiting for the message to be given.

PAPANDREOU PROPOSES GUL TO GO TO MIDDLE EAST COUNTRIES TOGETHER
Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and Prime Minister Abdullah Gul met each other in the Turkish night which was organized in Davos on Saturday. Papandreou voiced these demands to Gul:''we, as the foreign ministers of EU will hold a meeting on Monday and we will extend support to your efforts for peace. Let's go to the summit of the Middle East countries together. You warned us for peace.'' Gul told reporters that Papandreou would come to Turkey on Friday.

CHAIN FOR PEACE
Those who oppose to war raise their voice against operation of the United States on Iraq. Tens of thousands of people participated in the rallies and demonstrations held in various provinces of Turkey against war. Youth branches of the Republican People's Party (CHP) who convened in front of the United Nations (U.N.) representation in Ankara, made peace doves fly, and thousands of people in Aegean Izmir province came hand to hand and formed a ''peace chain''.

CICEK: AMNESTY IS INJUSTICE
Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said most of those who benefitted from amnesty, which was adopted during the period of 57th government, returned to prisons again. Stating that he opposed amnesty throughout his life, Cicek said there were around 60,000 convicts in prisons at the moment.
Cicek said most of those, who benefitted from amnesty, returned to prisons, Cicek commented that amnesty was injustice.

POWELL: IT IS YOUR TURN
The U.S.Secretary of State Colin Powell, who met with Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Abdullah Gul in Davos, pointed out that two critical weeks started for Iraq.
Stating that the United States always helped Turkey, Powell said they wanted help now. Powell indirectly menaced saying Bush would be in a difficult condition in his country if any problem occurs. Gul in his part said, ''we are not kingdom or emirate. We should first of all convince the Parliament.''

DENKTAS: EVERYTHING IS OPEN FROM NOW ON
President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said they completed negotiations on the part of the plan of the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, stating that, ''each side will present their own proposals.''

RAIN TO CONTINUE FOR ANOTHER WEEK
Heavy rain, which paralyzed particularly coastal regions last week, will continue across the country next week.
Directorate General of Meteorology said there will be heavy rain in the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Southeastern Anatolia, Marmara and Aegean regions. It was also reported that there would be snow in Southeastern Anatolia.

YAKIS SUPPORT TO DENKTAS
Foreign Minister Yasar Yakis responded to President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) who conveyed a message to Ankara saying, ''tell us if you give up the national case on Cyprus''.
Yakis said, ''Denktas successfully fulfills his assignment. Nobody should be in an effort to make the period we are going through more difficult.''

TOURISM MINISTRY RE-EXAMINES CASINOS
Tourism ministry said it was re-examining the issue of whether or not casinos could be opened again. Tourism ministry responded to the statements of representatives of tourism sector that Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government sheds green light to casinos, and they can be re-opened.
Re-activation of casinos are being examined nowadays when searches of the government are underway to find an additional re-source.

URAS BIDS FAREWELL TO ODP LEADERSHIP
Freedom and Solidarity Party (ODP) decided to convene extraordinarily following the statement of Ufuk Uras that he would resign from ODP leadership. ODP held its big congress on Sunday.
Stating that the election efforts, which ODP had with limited cadre, was not adequate, Uras stressed that results of elections could be a good means for them to review themselves and to renew themselves.
