Gul: Saddam Has To Take Many Responsibilities In Solution Of Iraqi Problem

DAVOS - Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said on Friday that Iraqi Head of State Saddam Hussein had to undertake many responsibilities in solution of Iraqi problem.
Gul responded to the questions of reporters at the Victoria Hotel in Davos.
Briefing about the views he has put forward during his contacts, Gul said everybody favored a solution without war. When asked what he felt over this, Gul said Saddam Hussein has to undertake many responsibilities in this respect.
Gul said the report which the U.N. inspectors would give could prevent coming of a very big power to the region.
Responding to a question about Turkey's EU full membership, Gul said, ''we want to show the whole world that Turkey is Moslem and democrat.''
When a journalist asked ''has the EU missed the opportunity?'' Gul said, ''we have exerted so many efforts. We have done our homework. We hoped the result would be positive, but it happened like this. In fact this is an important turning point.''
Stating that situation of Turkey would be better after issuing of EU reports in 2003, Gul said they would further strengthen EU General Secretariat.
Gul said Cyprus issue was brought onto the agenda in his contacts, adding that Turkey did not consider insolubility as solution. Gul said, ''it is not the policy of our government to present something as victory which will deceive ourselves on Cyprus issue.'' He said both sides should take steps for the solution of the problem, and that Turkish side was ready for this.
''I would like to make a call to the world from here. They should not only address to Turkey. The world should also tell them that there should be peace on the island from now on. There should not be scenes like Bosnia and Kosovo in the island. We are ready to find a satisfactory solution,'' Gul said.
When a journalist the U.S. President George W. Bush sent him a letter, Gul stressed the importance of international legitimacy on Iraqi issue.
Recalling that parliament made the final decision in Turkey, Gul said, ''talks continue as Turkey has to be prepared against the worst scenerio.''
Gul stressed that Turkey had not made a commitment within this framework.
