ISTANBUL - Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said on Thursday that he debated crisis on the agenda and the process related with Turkey's European Union (EU) membership following the Copenhagen Summit with German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer.
Gul and Fischer made a joint press statement following their meeting.
Gul said that they had a satisfactory meeting and said, ''we talked about crisis on the agenda and the process related with Turkey's EU membership following the Copenhagen Summit.''
They also took up Cyprus issue, Gul noted. He said that good relations between Turkey and Germany were very important and added that they also debated those relations.
Fischer congratulated Turkey for choosing solution of Iraqi crisis through peaceful means and said that they were searching for a peaceful solution.
Iraq should consent to the solutions that would be put forward, Fischer stressed.
Fischer noted that they were altogether searching for a peaceful solution for all innocent Iraqi people who were in danger.
They also talked about hope inspiring sessions regarding Turkey, Fischer said.
Fischer pointed out that they also talked about the future of Cyprus and hoped that positive developments would be recorded in Cyprus.
Responding to questions of reporters if Turkey's initiative would prevent a war, Fischer said that they were against a military operation because they had concerns.
Fischer noted that their current problem was terrorism and expressed concern over balances in the region.
Stating that Iraq was the direct neighbour of Turkey, Fischer said that Turkey was the neighbour of the EU at the same time and added that they had good neighbourly relations.
Fischer later held separate contacts with Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi and Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Saud Al-Faysal.
