NATO SECRETARY GENERAL ROBERTSON: WE PROTECT YOU
NATO Secretary General George Robertson said that if an attack is launched on Turkey, the fifth article of the treaty will function and organization will give full support to Turkey. Thus, if Saddam Hussein attacks on Turkey, it is announced for the first time that he will also attack on NATO.

FREE SCHOOL BOOK
National Education Minister Erkan Mumcu said that they are planning to distribute school books free firstly to elementary schools and then to all education institutions starting from 2003-2004 period. He added that they aim to increase compulsory education to 12 years in a period which will not be longer than five years and he said that they are also planning to include pre-school education to compulsory education.
Mumcu said that they inspected exam system and added that they are preparing a project which attributes importance to measure success without completely eliminating the system.

U.S. DELEGATION PERFORMS SITE-SURVEY IN CORLU
U.S. delegation carried on performing its site-survey of bases and ports which the United States would like to use during a possible operation against Iraq in northwestern Corlu Airport and southern Iskenderun Port. Delegation completed its study in Corlu International Civil Airport and will leave Corlu today. Corlu Airport has two runways which are three km in length and 30 and 45 meters in width. The airport is appropriate to NATO standards and has ten thousand aircraft capacity.

GUL: ''PROGRAMME WILL BE CONTINUED EVEN IF IMF DOESN'T COME''
Prime Minister Abdullah Gul stressed that they were determined to implement economic programme and noted that their first aim to decrease inflation rate. Gul who attended ''Economy Summit'' which was organized by Union of Turkish Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) in Ankara's Dedeman Hotel stated that the government was determined to put into practice reforms. Gul said, ''we will continue to implement economic programme, even if International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank don't come to Turkey.''

TREASURY TO HOLD 92-DAY REFERENCE BOND AUCTION
Treasury will hold 92-day reference bond auction on Monday. The bonds will be issued on January 22 and repaid on April 24. Treasury will sell 371-day discounted debenture bonds and debenture bonds with coupon payment once in every three month on Tuesday. The 371-day debenture bonds will be issued on January 22, 2003 and repaid on January 28, 2004. The 3-month debenture bonds will be issued on January 22, 2003 and the first coupon payment will be made on April 24, 2003.

CIA AGENTS ENTERS NORTHERN IRAQ VIA TURKEY
A total of 90 Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agents proceeded to Northern Iraq via Turkey secretly. Later, a group of 58 CIA agents came to Turkey. Most of the agents came to the Incirlik Air Base in southern province of Adana first. They proceeded from the Incirlik Base to Ankara. The special mission group was welcomed in Ankara by Turkish intelligence units. After holding contacts in Ankara, CIA agents entered Northern Iraq together with Turkish experts. During journeys of CIA agents, any official proceedings were not carried out to keep agents' visit secret.

SURPRISING MEETING AT CANKAYA
After paying a visit to the Incirlik Air Base in southern province of Adana, U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Richard Myers came to Ankara late on Sunday. As soon as he arrived in Ankara, General Myers paid a visit to General Staff Chief General Hilmi Ozkok at a dinner. U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Robert Pearson also partook in the dinner at the guardsmen troop at the Cankaya Presidential Palace. During the dinner, details of today's meeting between General Myers and General Ozkok became clear. Turkey's limited support to a possible operation against Iraq was high on agenda at the dinner. Turkish side said that Turkey could not meet all requests of the United States. General Myers is scheduled to meet with General Ozkok and National Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul today.

BUREAUCRACY IS ALSO SILENCED
Prime Ministry Undersecretary Fikret Uccan warned Prime Ministry bureaucrats not to communicate with reporters and not to give information and talk. Uccan is searching ways of measures to prevent leaking out of news. As a first measure, Uccan prohibited reporters' entrance to sections of Deputy Prime Ministry, Undersecretariat and Ministry and as a second measure, he warned Prime Ministry bureaucrats not to communicate with reporters.

EROGLU: ANNAN CAN PRESENT A NEW MAP
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu said that United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan can present a new map to the sides. Eroglu said that demonstrations in TRNC strengthened Glafcos Clerides and he can request new demands.

CRITICAL DAY IN ANKARA
U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Richard Myers who came to Incirlik Air Base on Sunday will meet with Chief of General Staff Gen. Hilmi Ozkok and Defense Minister Gonul in Ankara on Monday. Myers, Ozkok and Gonul are expected to take up logistic support and deployment of U.S. soldiers in Turkey. Myers who replied to questions in Italy before he came to Turkey did not give detailed information about deployment of soldiers. Sources said that the United States proposed to deploy 15,000 soldiers in Turkey and added that Turkey welcomed this proposal.

HISARCIKLIOGLU: ''GOVERNMENT SHOULD LISTEN TO OUR VOICE, SINCE IT CANNOT BE SUCCESSFUL WITHOUT OUR SUPPORT''
Rifat Hisarciklioglu, the Chairman of Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), delivered a speech at ''Economy Summit'' which Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullatif Sener, State Ministers Ali Babacan and Kursad Tuzmen, Industry and Trade Minister Ali Coskun, Labour and Social Security Minister Murat Basesgioglu, and other ministers attended. Hisarciklioglu addressed the prime minister and ministers who attended the meeting, ''you should listen to this circle. It is not possible for you to be successful without the support of this circle. Every issue taken up here is expectation of more than a million Turkish entrepreneurs. I believe that constructive and open stance of the prime minister will play an important role in solution of problems that our country is facing. We want this government to solve these problems, listen to our views and well-evaluate our proposals.''

BIG STEP TO PEACE
After Egypt and Syria; Iran, Saudi Arabia and Jordan accepted invitation of Turkey which proposed to hold a ''regional summit'' aiming to find a peaceful solution to Iraq crisis. The regional countries will attend ''Peace Summit'' which will be held in Ankara on January 23. It was reported that United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan called Gul on phone and thanked to him for his great efforts for a peaceful solution to Iraq issue.

GENERAL MYERS IN TURKEY
U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Richard Myers arrived in Turkey to hold a series of contacts. Myers came to Incirlik Air Base, where a U.S. team of experts is carrying a site survey. General Myers and an accompanying delegation proceeded to Ankara following their contacts in Incirlik. Fourth Army Corps Commander General Kemal Yilmaz welcomed General Myers and accompanying delegation at Ankara's Esenboga Airport. General Myers is expected to depart from Turkey on Monday after holding contacts at the General Staff and the Ministry of National Defense.

''IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO TRANSPORT TANKS''
It was revealed that Mersin-Yenice-Incirlik-Nusaybin railway line which the United States wanted to use in transporting troops and equipment to Northern Iraq in a possible military operation against Iraq, was not appropriate for transportation of military troops and military equipment.

BAYKAL WARNS ITALIAN LEFTIST PARTIES TO BE CAREFUL AGAINST KADEK
Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal who is currently in Italian capital Rome to attend the meeting of the Party of European Socialists (PES), met with Democrats of the Left leader Pierro Fassino, and warned Italian leftist parties against the terrorist organization KADEK. Baykal said after the meeting, ''I told Mr. Fassino that they should assess the attitude of the KADEK again. Italian leftist parties have assumed a good will attitude against the KADEK so far. Blood was shed for the first time after a long period in the terrorist attack on January 15. I warned Italian leftist parties to be careful against the KADEK.''
