ANKARA - Foreign Ministry Spokesman Yusuf Buluc said on Wednesday that the memorandum of understanding on permission to U.S. team to inspect air bases and ports in Turkey did not mean that Turkey had consented to further steps of the United States.
Buluc told a weekly press conference that the memorandum on the demand of the United States to inspect air bases and ports in Turkey was a technical document signed between military authorities.
''This has become a matter of discussion. A result satisfying both of the sides has occurred. Articles on legal side of the issue is a solution which has joined legal needs of Turkey and the needs of the United States in the optimal level and which do not mean that Turkey is making a concession of its law or sovereignty,'' Buluc said.
Noting that the mentioned document was a document which set the principles of a fulfillment of a certain military activity, Buluc said, ''the document which has been negotiated and concluded is a document related with inspection of certain military bases and installations and to this end, its content is limited. Technical rules are rules directly concerning site-surveys.''
A new document had to be prepared or the current document had to be broadened in a way to meet the demands according to changing conditions if some preparatory steps followed the site-surveys, Buluc stated.
Buluc added, ''conclusion of this document does not mean that Turkey has consented to further steps.''
U.S. DELEGATION TO CONTINUE EXAMINATIONS IN SABIHA GOKCEN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
ISTANBUL - U.S. delegation, who came to Sabiha Gokcen International Airport in Kurtkoy within the scope of possible operation against Iraq, completed contacts.
The 14-people delegation, who came to the Airport with C-130 military airplane, held examinations in various units and met with officials.
It was reported that the delegation would continue examinations on Thursday and probably depart from the Airport on Friday.
