FORMER U.S. AMBASSADOR TO TURKEY PARRIS SAYS TURKEY IS BEING LATE TO
TAKE DECISION ON POSSIBLE OPERATION AGAINST IRAQ
Former U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Marc Parris said that Turkey was being late to take a decision related to a possible operation against Iraq and noted that Arab world would support the United States in case of a war against Iraq. Parris stated that Saudi Arabia and Jordan have already taken decision on that issue.

ALI TALIP OZDEMIR ELECTED AS ANAP LEADER
Ali Talip Ozdemir was elected as the leader of Motherland Party (ANAP) on Saturday evening. Ozdemier got 640 of the 1078 votes in the election. The other candidate Lutfullah Kayalar got 428 votes. Ali Talip Ozdemir has become the fourth leader of the party after Turgut Ozal, Yýldýrým Akbulut and Mesut Yýlmaz. Ozdemir was born in Eregli town of central Konya province in 1953 and he is a mechanical engineer. Ozdemir is married with three children.

IRAQ WANTS TURKEY TO GIVE MATERIALS IN CASE OF POSSIBLE WAR
A delegation including 350 businessmen headed by State Minister Kursad Tuzmen met with the Iraqi government. Iraq asked for Turkey to give materials to the country in case of a possible operation. Iraqi government wanted Turkish firms to attend tenders for generator, flour, wheat, soap, cable, oil, detergent and electrical equipment.

BAYKAL SAYS GOVERNMENT DOES NOT GIVE CONFIDENCE
Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal said that the government did not give confidence and added that it did not act consistent in its policies. Responding to questions of journalists before a CHP meeting, Baykal claimed that the government gives up economic targets gradually, adding that there is tension in foreign policy.

MOST DIFFICULT FLIGHT
Aliye Il who was injured in the plane crash that took place in Diyarbakýr last Thursday got on the same type of plane to go to Istanbul for treatment. After the plane crash she said she would never fly. Il was given medicine to keep her calm down during the flight.

ALI TALIP OZDEMIR ELECTED AS ANAP LEADER
Ali Talip Ozdemir won the leadership competition in Motherland Party (ANAP) which was held yesterday. Ali Talip Ozdemir got 640 votes in the elections, while his rival Lutfullah Kayalar got 428 votes. Former ANAP leader Mesut Yýlmaz didn't even want his poster to be hung in the congress hall.

ERDOGAN:''WE CAN ALSO CRITICIZE''
AK Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan said regarding the statement of General Hilmi Ozkok, the Chief of General Staff that ''everybody is free to make such criticisms in a democratic society. Certainly everybody should also be open to all sorts of criticisms against them.'' Gen. Ozkok earlier accused the government of encouraging fundemantalists.

CRITICAL TUESDAY IN LEFKOSA
Preparations are underway for the public meeting that will be held in Lefkosa on January 14 by opposition parties and non-governmental organizations which want a solution to be reached in Cyprus until February 28 in line with Annan's plan. The Greek Cypriot administration which colesly monitors the preparations took measures thinking that there may be persons who can want to pass the Greek Cypriot side.

PRIME MINISTER: ''WE ARE NOT UNDECIDED''
Prime Minsiter Abdullah Gul who went to Saudi Arabia for solution of the Iraqi problem by peaceful means said, ''we are not undecided. Political will is clear. It was stated both verbally and it was given in written statement. We should not allow misunderstandings to occur currently. We should be in a great solidarity to protect our interests and unity.'' Gul said that demands of the United States were discussed and added that there was no political will vacuum regarding issues on which agreement was reached.

RALLY IN TRNC
Those who want the United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan on Cyprus to be negotiated aim to gather 80,000 people in a rally entitled, ''Solution and EU Determination'' which will be held in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on January 14. Parliamentary delegation under the chairmanship of Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc who will go to TRNC on Monday will meet with representatives of nongovernmental organizations.

GUL: ''TURKEY WILL BE AFFECTED MOST IN CASE OF POSSIBLE WAR''
Prime Minister Abdullah Gul who is touring Middle East countries for solution of the Iraqi problem by peaceful means said, ''we are exerting efforts to prevent a possible war against Iraq. Regional countries will be affected most in case of a war against Iraq. We suffered a lot during Gulf War.'' Gul said that he had a very beneficial meeting with government of Saudi Arabia and stated that they reached agreement to exert efforts to overcome crisis through peaceful ways with Saudi Arabia.

Prime Minister Abdullah Gul who went to Saudi Arabia yesterday said that there is no indecision in the government about the Iraqi issue. Speaking at Esenboga Airport before leaving for Saudi Arabia, Gul stressed that the attitude and the policy of Turkey about this issue is very clear. Prime Minister Gul said that the policy of Turkey which is in line with the compromise reached in National Security Council (NSC) meeting continued.
