ANKARA - A Turkish Airlines (THY) plane named ''Konya'' en route from Istanbul to southeastern Diyarbakir province crashed during landing at Diyarbakir airport on Wednesday.
Seventy-four of 80 people on the RJ-100 plane died while six people survived the accident.
Sources said that the plane which took off from Istanbul at 6.35 a.m. crashed at the beginning of the runway around 8.13 p.m.
There were 75 passengers, including seven foreigners and three babies and five crew on the plane which split into three pieces after the crash.
Rescue teams came to the spot immediately after the crash since the airport was bound to Second Tactic Air Force Command. Six survivors were immediately hospitalized in Diyarbakir.
Survivors Celal Tokmak, Murat Karamutlu and Aliye Il were taken under medical treatment in State Hospital, Murat Altinel and Gencal Gunes in Military Hospital, and a two-year-old baby who has not been identified yet was brought to Diyarbakir Faculty of Medicine Hospital.
Meanwhile, crew member Yavuz Senol, who was reported to be alive immediately after the accident, was later announced to be dead.
Survivor Aliye Il told A.A correspondent that the plane started to descend towards Diyarbakir airport over Cinar township.
Il said, ''there was a big loud during the landing, the plane crashed and split into pieces. I fell from the plane as it split apart and landed on a pile of hay. It was burning. Then, there was an explosion. The hay started to burn shortly after I landed on it. I jumped off the hay and ran from the area. The plane was burning. It was terrifying. Then, soldiers came and hospitalized us.''
Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim said that a crisis team was formed and that three pilots, two engineers, an expert from the THY, and Civil Aviation General Director Serdar Cebeci would leave for Diyarbakir on Thursday morning for investigation.
Yildirim noted that the cause of the crash could be determined after the deciphering of the black box.
Stating that planes could land when there was 1,500 metres of sight, Yildirim said that there was 3,500 metres of sight when the plane was landing at the airport.
Yildirim pointed out that there could be local heavy fog and that it would become definite after the investigation.
Responding to a question if there was pilotage fault, Yildirim said that it was not possible to say anything according to the preliminary reports.

YILDIRIM: SECOND BLACK BOX FOUND
Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim said that the second black box of RJ 100 plane belonging to Turkish Airlines (THY) was found.
State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullatif Sener and Yildirim visited on Thursday Aliye Il, Celal Tokmak and Murat Karamutlu who were injured in plane crash in the hospital.
Sener said, ''there has been fog in Diyarbakir province for 3-4 days. The accident might occur due to heavy fog. The reason for the crash will become clear after the black box is deciphered. Relevant units will decipher the black box.''
Upon a question that there was no instrument landing system (ILS) in the airport, Sener said that some information and thoughts were repeated again and again and noted that there could be views and thoughts related to plane and airport. He added that the reason would become clear after the black box was deciphered. Yildirim said that they formed an ''accident crisis team'' including five officials from the ministry and one official from THY, stating the team would examine issues related to the accident.
''The second black box was found. The team which will come from Ankara will examine the black boxes. The reason for accident will become clear after black boxes are deciphered,'' Yildirim noted.
The team is waiting at Ankara's Esenboga Airport for weather conditions to be appropriate to fly to the region.
The team which was formed by Transportation Ministry, reporters, 22 deputies, and families of people who died in plane crash in Diyarbakir are waiting for the plane which will fly to Diyarbakir.
It was reported that six foreign people who died in the accident had departed from England, the United States, Finland, Scotland, Austria and Germany.
