KASTAMONU - Justice and Development (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday, ''we should wait for report of weapon inspectors in Iraq.''
When asked whether or not elections in southeastern province of Siirt could be postponed due to a possible military operation against Iraq, Erdogan said, ''I do not have any concerns. None of us wants a war in the region. We have been expending great efforts to find a peaceful solution. The most important side binding us is the resolution of the United Nations. We should wait for report of the weapon inspectors in Iraq. Weapon inspectors will announce their report on January 26. We hope that any result damaging peace would not come out. If Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is aware of these facts, he should do someting to ease the tension.''
Responding a question about opposition parties' calling on President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to resign from his post, Erdogan told reporters, ''it is a domestic problem of the TRNC. Turkish Cypriots need more solidarity and unity than ever. However, everyone has the right to explain their views. Turkish Cypriot people will take their own decision through democratic ways. I think that any intervention of us will not be correct at this point.''
