ANKARA - Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal said on Tuesday that Turkey does not have an active, determined and consistent policy concerning a possible operation against Iraq.
Baykal, who chatted with reporters, said that there are contradictory manners, wrong signals and hesitations in Turkey about a possible operation against Iraq.
Noting that the events happened in Iraq in 1991 caused great economic problems in Turkey and administrative vacuum in Northern Iraq, Baykal said that territorial integrity of Iraq can be in danger in case of a possible operation and this will turn the region into a hell for a long time and Turkey will pay the price of it more than anybody else.
Baykal said that a possible operation against Iraq will jeopardize peace and stability of Southeast Anatolia which was provided by paying important prices.
Noting that Turkey has not been participated in a military operation for 80 years, Baykal said that it was said that Turkey should participate in a possible operation because there can be a political formation in Northern Iraq, if it is not interfered. He added that it is not clear how Turkey will prevent a political formation when it participates in the operation.
