Denktas: What Our People Sufferred Till 1974 Is A Shame For Humanity

ANKARA - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas said on Sunday that what their people sufferred from till 1974 was a shame for humanity.
Prior to his departure from Ankara for TRNC, Denktas said that the Greek Cypriot administration occupied the position of ''Cyprus Republic'' by force.
The further intention of the Greek Cypriots was to make others accept Turkish Cypriots as minority, Denktas noted.
Denktas stated that a new schedule was put forward within the scope of United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan for Cyprus.
They would continue their fight for protection of political equality of Turkish side also from now on, Denktas pointed out.
Denktas said that they discussed federation with the Greek Cypriot administration for 16 years but the Greek Cypriot administration did not give up its claim to represent whole of the island and applied to the European Union (EU) with that false title.
They opposed to this application of the Greek Cypriot administration made on behalf of whole of the island, Denktas noted. But, he said, nobody took into consideration their objection.
Pointing out that a new partnership came onto the agenda within the scope of Annan's plan, Denktas said that the EU announced that it would admit Greek Cypriot administration as a member even if there was an agreement or not immediately after the beginning of contacts between the parties in Cyprus.
Denktas noted that this development ended wish of Greek Cypriots to form a new partnership.
Some unwanted maps which were included in Annan's plan were put forward, Denktas said.
Denktas stated that they would continue to work to remove those maps and said that putting those maps into practice would mean entrance of 60 thousand Greek Cypriots in TRNC territory.
''This is against facts of Cyprus. We say we need time and we want opportunities to be given to negotiate this document with good will. Cyprus issue is not Denktas issue, it is not Denktas policy,'' he stated.
Underlining that importance of Cyprus for Turkey was appreciated by the Turkish state, Denktas said specific parameters regarded with Turkey's Cyprus policy, was preserved by all the governments.
Denktas said they did everything for compromise, noting that Turkey's friends should convey the Greek Cypriot administration some facts at this criticial point on Cyprus issue, they should tell the Greek Cypriot administration that they could not be the only government on the island.
Responding to a question Denktas said February 28 was not a final date, and recalled that this was also stated by the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan. He said there were many issues which should be examined, and that it was not right to put pressure for time. Denktas said some dates were put forth in front of the sides because of the own program of the EU, stressing that they hoped to reach a result in March, even if not in February.
Responding to another question, Denktas said the view that Annan plan was accepted by Greek Cypriot administration leader Glafcos Clerides and was rejected by him was not right, adding that both sides conveyed their drawbacks to the Secretary General regarding the plan that was presented.
Denktas said a second plan was prepared as a result of those developments, and that an understanding appeared as if he had rejected this plan as a result of some propagandas.
Denktas said neither he nor Clerides accepted this plan, adding that he had announced that the Turkish side was ready to negotiate the plan.
