Denktas: ''we Will Continue Talks With Good Will Till February 28''

ANKARA - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas said on Thursday that they would continue Cyprus talks with good will till February 28.
Denktas told a press conference that Turkey's consent was taken in every decision regarding Cyprus issue.
''The European Union (EU) wants membership of whole Cyprus, but it is aware that it has admitted half of it,'' Denktas said.
Denktas noted that the EU was aware that it could not implement its acquis in the north of the island.
The EU ''in shape'' seemed to obey guarantorship agreements foreseeing that Cyprus could not be a member to any organization which Turkey was not a member, Denktas said.
Denktas noted, ''we will continue Cyprus talks with good will till the end of February. We hope we will progress till that day. This is our hope and we will work for it. Getting a result is dependent on good will of the two sides.''
DENKTAS: ''WE WANTED TO NEGOTIATE AGREEMENT EVEN UNDER THREAT OF GREEK CYPRIOTS' EU MEMBERSHIP AS REPRESENTATIVE OF WHOLE ISLAND''
President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has said that they wanted to negotiate agreement even under threat of Greek Cypriots' EU membership as the representative of whole island.''
Holding a press conference on Thursday, Denktas said that an atmosphere had been created as if 'he had left Turkey in a difficult situation by sending a representative to Copenhagen and not signing the U.N. document', stressing that Greek Cypriot administration leader Glafcos Clerides had been invited to Copenhagen as president of 'Cyprus Republic'.
''Clerides was invited to Copenhagen as the head of Cyprus republic state. The EU made this invitation to Clerides. Even existence of Turkish Cypriots was ignored. The objections we have made so far and initiatives aiming to prove that Greek Cypriots are violating the 1960 agreements were ignored. Actually, whole world already knew before December 12 that Greek Cypriot administration would join the EU as the representative of whole Cyprus whether or not there would be an agreement and whether or not the document would be signed. By forgetting this, it is meaningless to say the Turkish Cypriot side did not do this or that. Even under this threat, we wanted to negotiate the document presented to us. I said that we wanted opportunity to negotiate these with Greek Cypriots but we were not given such an opportunity,'' he said.
''They wanted us to sign the document in a fait accompli. An atmosphere was created in Turkey as if 'only Denktas did not sign the agreement'. But this was not true. I want to stress that also Clerides did not sign the document,'' Denktas noted.
Denktas said, ''membership of Greek Cypriot administration, which is said to be Cyprus, was a decision taken beforehand even if we sign or not. We have received a letter from the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan saying that 'you were in Copenhagen on December 12. You talked with Cyprus Special Envoy Alvaro De Soto. There is a very small difference between Clerides and you. Overcome this difference and sign the documents.' All the tactic is that, 'considering that Turkey will enter the EU, it will absolutely put pressure on Denktas, make him sign this fait accompli, and thus Cyprus problem will be solved. One third of our territories will be lost, and thus sovereignty will not be realized. Greek Cypriots will join us gradually. The unity, which had been decided to be comprised of two regions since 1977 will be lifted. Our status which had been founding partner in 1960 will be installed in legal Cyprus Republic as priviliged minority this time. Turkish Cypriots will be obliged to evacuate the island, like the Crete Turks, within 5-10 years. We evaluated the document in this way. Turkey evaluated the document like this also and we rejected it.''
Denktas said they wanted to adjust the issues presented in the document through talks, stressing that, ''during the meeting we had made with the government on Wednesday evening, our approach was approved. Now that the EU wants whole Cyprus. Greek Cypriot side insists that the agreement should be within the framework of the Security Council resolutions. Now that they are trying to sentence us to this. Cyprus question can be solved very easily. U.N. Security Council resolution in 1964 is what prevents the solution of Cyprus question. They had recognized government of bloody handed Makarious as the legal government and violated international agreements. They tolerated terrorism which continued for 11 years on Cyprus, and they supported violence. They adopted inhumane embargoes. They benefited from stagnancy in Turkish Cypriot economy and went too far by saying that 'accept the Greek Cypriots as government if you want recovery in economy.' We will continue the talks till end of February. We wish both the EU and De Soto will show more just and fair understanding and flexible approach after seeing that Turkish Cypriots will not submit to pressure and by realizing that Greek Cypriot side only made half of Cyprus as member.''
Denktas said obtaining a result would depend on the good will of the two sides.
