Agar Becomes New Leader Of D.Y.P.

ANKARA - Mehmet Agar, a deputy of the True Path Party (DYP) from Elazig province, got the vote of absolute majority in the first round of vote during the Seventh Regular Congress of the DYP, and became the new leader of the DYP on Saturday.
Mehmet Agar won votes of 815 out of 1,109 delegates in the first round of vote, and became the sixth leader of the DYP.
Ilkan Kesici got 227 votes, Hasan Subasi won 47 votes, Ufuk Soylemez got 14 votes and Dursun Atabek received 1 vote. Saban Yigit could not get any votes.
Agar who was born in Ankara in 1951, graduated from Ankara University Political Sciences Faculty. He served as police chief in Ankara and Istanbul, governor of Erzurum.
He entered the parliament as DYP deputy from Elazig in the 20th term, and served as interior and justice minister.
Agar resigned from the DYP prior to the general elections in 1999. He was elected as independent deputy from Elazig in the 21st and 22nd terms.
Agar rejoined the DYP on November 21, 2002.
