KOMOTINI - Xanthi Mufti Mehmet Emin Aga who was elected by Turkish minority in Western Thrace, was sentenced to six months in prison.
Aga was sentenced to a total of six months in prison in two separate cases on charges of using an illegal official title in his messages he had released to mark Islamic holy nights.
Aga who applied to the Court of Appeals, was released.
He stressed, ''Turkish minority's freedom of religion has been violated. Although the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) took a decision about the issue of mufti in Western Thrace, Greek government has not recognized yet muftis elected by Turkish minority. Greece which has been defending human rights in international platforms, does not grant rights to minorities in Greece. I call on Greek authorities to fulfill their responsibilities for Muslim Turkish minority.''
