COPENHAGEN - Justice and Development Party (AK Party) deputy Egemen Bagis said on Wednesday irrespective of a date was given to Turkey at Copenhagen summit, it would be a more free country as a result of reforms that were made on this path.
Bagis, who accompanies AK Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Copenhagen, visited Bella Center where the European Union (EU) summit will be held.
Responding questions of the A.A correspondent, Bagis said, ''Turkish people have several reasons to be hopeful about the date. Turkish people have a stable government. They have an opposition party which shares similar opinions on the issue with us.''
Stating that there was a coordination among the nongovernmental organizations and all institutions of the country, Bagis said that 80 percent of Turkish people wanted EU membership.
Bagis noted, ''the most important thing is that constitutional amendments and reform laws are preparing a very sound infrastructure for Turkish people to have bright future. Thus, we have many reasons to be hopeful about the issue. Turkey will be a more free and democratic country with the reforms irrespective of a date is given to the country at the summit. Turkish people deserve to live with standards higher than standards the EU member countries have. We are working to fulfil promises that we gave before the elections. If we win a date, it will be better, of course.''
Bagis added that Erdogan would meet with prime ministers of Britain, the Netherlands and Greece and also European Parliament (EP) President Pat Cox on Thursday.
