COPENHAGEN - European Parliament Liberal Group Chairman Braham Watson has warned that acceptance of a divided Cyprus's European Union (EU) membership might bring along more problems.
Liberal party representatives of the EU member countries came together on Wednesday prior to the Copenhagen summit.
Speaking to the A.A correspondent before the meeting, Watson said that accession of both sides in Cyprus to the EU was the desired thing in the island.
Watson said that membership of only the Greek Cypriot side might cause more problems instead of solving existing ones.
Noting that they did not welcome the joint plan of Germany and France about Turkey, Watson said that French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder had presented such a proposal upon different power balances in their countries and public pressure.
Stressing that Liberal Group members were the only group that extended support to Turkey's EU membership without any precondition, Watson said, ''however, there are certain criteria. And start of accession talks is impossible before fulfillment of these criteria. Any country should not be granted date for opening of accession talks before it fulfils criteria.''
