ANKARA - Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said on Monday that important decisions would be taken in the coming days, stressing that, ''Turkey acts as a whole in important issues.''
Premier Gul met with Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal for one hour and 15 minutes.
Speaking after the meeting Gul recalled that there was a policy method which they accepted before the elections, stressing that they earlier stated that the ruling and the opposition should be in close dialogue.
Gul said exchange of views was necessary when important issues are in question, stressing that two-party system was formed as a result of the decision of people.
Pointing out that there were foreign policy problems in front of Turkey, Gul said they were recent developments pertaining to the EU, Cyprus, and Iraq.
Gul said he felt the need to discuss those with the opposition party leader Deniz Baykal and briefed him about the things going on.
Gul said, ''I have listened to their views. It was a very important and beneficial meeting. Turkey acts as a whole in important issues. Parliament also acts as a whole. I will go to the summit in Copenhagen within this responsibility. We hope that developments which Turkey deserves will be recorded there. Our contacts will continue in the coming days.
Meanwhile, CHP leader Baykal said that Prime Minister Gul and he had made final evaluations before the Copenhagen summit.
''The Prime Minister has informed us on the latest situation and we have expressed our opinions. However, the Prime Minister is going to Copenhagen with the support of the opposition. The government will bring its rightful case about winning a date for beginning of accession talks with the EU to Copenhagen with the support of the opposition. I wish them success. I hope that they would manage to win a date. As the CHP, we support their efforts,'' Baykal said.
Stressing that EU membership was currently the most important issue of Turkey, Baykal said that they would also closely follow other issues.
Noting that he would meet with the Prime Minister when they saw it necessary regarding other issues, Baykal said, ''we will continue evaluating other issues together. We will continue supporting the government about these issues with good will and constructive understanding.''
