Foreign Ministry Says Words Of Yakis Do Not Mean Commitment

ANKARA - Foreign Ministry said early on Wednesday that Foreign Minister Yasar Yakis' ''mentioning choices that could remind a cooperation with the United States did not mean a commitment for Turkey'' and added that ''such choices were not made a matter of discussion with any country.''
A statement of the Foreign Ministry quoted Yasar as responding to a question on a possible military operation on Iraq during a joint press conference with his British counterpart Jack Straw that ''Turkey wanted the issue to be solved without a need for a military operation.''
The statement said that Yasar noted that there was need for a second United Nations (U.N.) Security Council resolution in case of a military operation because the current resolution no 1441 did not permit use of automatic force.
''Responding to a question, Yakis said that we can cooperate with our ally United States within the framework of our current good relations in case all these conditions are fulfilled and touched on some choices that can come to minds in this context. However, mentioning of these choices by the minister does not mean a commitment for Turkey. Such choices are not made a matter of discussion with any country,'' the statement added.
