Annan: Cyprus Plan Will Be Changed If Necessary

NEW YORK - The U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan could make changes on Cyprus plan if necessary.
Annan's spokesman Fred Eckhard said on Monday that the Secretary General waited for the comments of the two sides, stressing that they would evaluate the views of President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides and that a decision would be taken afterwards how to change the plan if it is considered as necessary.
Eckhard said the U.N. Secretary General will convene Denktas and Clerides after this and would be in an effort to make them agree on one text. He said no date has been set on this issue.
Recalling that Annan first of all wanted the sides to convey their comments on the issue, Eckhard said Cyprus Special Envoy Alvaro de Soto, who is currently in Ankara to meet with Foreign Minister Yasar Yakis, expected the sides to convey their response on Tuesday.
When asked if an agreement would be reached before Copenhagen summit, Eckhard said they did not have much time, and that they did their best to reach a result in the remaining time.
Eckard said this was the excellent opportunity reached so far to solve Cyprus question, stating that they wanted to record progress before Copehagen Summit.
