Eroglu: There Is Consensus That U.N. Package Can't Be Accepted As It Is

LEFKOSA - TRNC Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu said on Monday that there is a consensus in the society that Annan's Cyprus plan can't be accepted as it is.
Eroglu said that everybody favours an agreement and membership to the EU after reaching an agreement, adding that the views about the plan have to be integrated and everybody should act together in order to strengthen the position of Turkish side in the negotiations.
Eroglu who met with representatives of agriculture and animal husbandry sector, said that ''we have a document in front of us and the concessions which the Turkish Cypriot side has to give are at the forefront. We must evaluate this well.''
Eroglu said that the plan seems more acceptable for the Greek Cypriot side, yet 76 percent of the Greek Cypriot people oppose the plan.
''Greek Cypriots plan to join the EU on Dec. 12 and they plan to be seen as if they also took the approval of the Turkish side while doing that,'' Eroglu said.
Eroglu said that the number of Turkish Cypriots working in Greek Cypriot side is 1100 and 400 of them work in bases.
Eroglu said majority of TRNC people was engaged in agriculture and that Annan's plan foresaw giving all the fields, on which there is production, to Greek Cypriots, and stressing that he would like to ask those who said, ''a new Guzelyurt will be formed'' where it would be formed.
Stating that they had to be realistic for the future of Turkish Cypriot people, Eroglu said, ''all of us favor agreement and continuation of talks.''
Underlining that Annan's plan envisaged giving the fields, on which production of potatoes and citrus fruits was made, to the Greek Cypriots, and that only animal breeding remained, Eroglu stated that irrigated soil would be given, and that they had to be very careful.
Eroglu said responsibility of the government was very big, and that the signature they would put could bring very good or bad days in the future. He said it was their responsibility to act under the light of the facts of the country.
TRNC Chamber of Agriculture Engineers Chairman Mehmet Altan briefed about Annan's plan and the maps that have been presented.
Altan said, ''only by looking at the maps, it can be said that Annan's plan did not envisage agriculture to Greek Cypriot villages,'' He said, ''this plan leaves our property to 9.5 percent.''
Altan said the plan envisaged giving at least 75 percent of the coasts to be given to the Greek Cypriots, and that thus pioneering tourism sector would be endangered.
Altan said the Greek Cypriot side could take 95 percent of the island with Annan's plan, and asked ''do they want this community to immigrate?''
He said they found the plan unjust, and considered it as a plan which will demolish Turkish Cypriots.
