De Soto Wants Sides To Convey Their Views Regarded With Cyprus Plan To The U.N. Soon

ANKARA - The U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's Cyprus Special Envoy Alvaro De Soto on Monday wanted the sides on Cyprus to convey their views regarded with Annan's plan to the U.N. in the possible shortest time. De Soto who had paid a surprise visit to Ankara last week, paid another surprise visit to Ankara on Sunday evening.
Diplomatic sources mentioned the importance which the European Union and the U.N. attributed to taking positive steps on Cyprus issue till Copenhagen, and stated that De Soto's second visit should be evaluated in this respect. According to this, De Soto's visit aims at stressing the importance of shortness of time.
De Soto, who had contacts in Foreign Ministry, pointed out that they preferred the interpretations that would be made to Annan's plan to be short.
Ankara conveyed the support it expended to reaching a fair solution on Cyprus which will satisfy both sides and pointed out that difficulties caused by shortness of time.
MOLLER MEETS DE SOTO
Per Stig Moller, Foreign Minister of European Union (EU) Term President Denmark and the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's Cyprus Special Envoy Alvaro de Soto met in Ankara on Monday.
Moller and de Soto met for 1,5 hours following their meeting with Turkish officials.
Speaking after the meeting, Moller said he got information about the point reached in U.N.'s Cyprus plan, and noted that they exerted efforts to reach a solution.
Moller responded positively to the question asking whether or not he was hopeful for the result. Moller said everybody knew what was on the table, and that the two sides on the island discussed the same things since last January. He said there was nothing new.
The guest minister stated that the problem could be solved in case there is a political will, noting that it was time to solve the question.
Pointing out that Greek Cypriot side should also accept the plan, Moller asked ''why shouldn't they accept unification of the island?''.
De Soto said the U.N. was in continuous contact with the EU on Cyprus issue, noting that EU always supported the U.N. in this respect.
De Soto said they expected to get response of the two sides on Tuesday regarded with the opposition points against the U.N. plan, stressing that it would be beneficial if the sides state only the obligatory points that can be discussed in the remaining time.
Moller departed from Turkey after the meeting.
