ANKARA - Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moller said on Monday that the reform package carries great importance for Turkey-EU relations and for future of Turkey.
Speaking to the press together with Foreign Minister Yasar Yakis after his meeting with AK Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Moller said that he came to Turkey to listen to the views of Turkish officials as Denmark is the EU Term President.
Moller said that Denmark is pleased with the positive steps taken in Turkey, recalling that Copenhagen criteria have to be met before starting accession talks with the EU. He reiterated that EU expects the adoption of the reform package in Turkey.
Moller said that they took up the Cyprus issue in the meeting, adding that a united Cyprus will be an advantage before Copenhagen summit.
''I told Erdogan and Yakis that this historic opportunity has to be used well,'' said Moller, adding that they suggest the sides in Cyprus that negotiations have to start until the Copenhagen summit and a result has to be taken.
Moller said that there is no new element in U.N.'s Cyprus plan, adding that there are only details. Moller said that the sides on the island know very well what should be done.
Yakis said in his short statement that the visit of Moller is the continuation of AK Party leader Erdogan's visit to Denmark, adding that the contacts have the character of preparation for EU Summit.
Yakis told Moller in the meeting that Turkey finds positive the policy of TRNC President Rauf Denktas about U.N. plan on Cyprus. Erdogan said that the EU should not apply double standards between Turkey and other candidate countries. He stressed that Turkey's position is more advanced than other candidate countries, adding that he wants to meet with Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen once again.
