Denktas: We Cannot Sign Anything Under Pressure

LEFKOSA - President Rauf Denktas of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Wednesday, ''we cannot sign anything under pressure. We cannot record progress without listening to views of our government, parliament and people.''
In an interview with a radio channel in the TRNC, President Denktas said that there were some points in the solution plan of United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan that should be changed.
Recalling that the Turkish National Security Council (NSC) would convene on Friday, President Denktas said, ''we have been holding contacts with Ankara perpetually. Turkish officials assured us that there were not any change in their policy about Cyprus.''
''There is a time pressure on the Cyprus question. They claim that if the Cyprus question was solved, they would set a date for opening of accession talks with Turkey. We will see it at Copenhagen Summit on December 12. What will happen if they do not set a date for Turkey? We will expend efforts to change deficiencies in the solution plan of United Nations Secretary General Annan,'' he said.
President Denktas added, ''we cannot sign anything under pressure. We cannot record progress without listening to views of our government, parliament and people. We can progress in line with our people's desire.''
