ANKARA - Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal said on Wednesday that nobody has right to give lesson to CHP about the military coup, adding that ''CHP is a party which said 'no' to Sept. 12 Constitution. CHP can't accept any show offs about democracy and human rights.''
Addressing the opening of the CHP group meeting, Baykal said that CHP will always protect the basis of the constitutional regime and the secular democratic Republic. CHP will fulfil its responsibilities in the best way, Baykal said, noting that democracy is the basis of their understanding of politics. ''CHP has always pursued a very resolved and consistent attitude about military coups. CHP is the only party which had assumed a clear attitude against March 12, 1960. CHP has maintained its attitude against military coups since then. CHP is the party which was closed by Sept. 12 military coup,'' Baykal said.
''We are the party which extended support to changing of many articles of 1982 Constitution. We can contribute to initiatives aiming to further make the Constitution democratic if such a need arises. No body should doubt about it. But there are certain provisions of the Constitution which can't be amended. The understanding of AK Party which says that it wants to prepare a new constitution is not very correct and appropriate. We will continue to protect the modern, democratic, secular and social legal state identity of the Constitution,'' he said.
Baykal noted that ''I request you not to deal with secularism in a secret or open way. Turkey has overcome this issue.''
Baykal said that ''we want to soften the politics and do the things that could not be done today. We want the government to be successful, because we know that the success of the government will be the success of Turkey. I hope a new beginning will be made after the vote of confidence. We know the problems of Turkey and we won't make any mistake, because we know that the eyes of Turkey are on us.''
