NEW YORK - Foreign Minister Yasar Yakýs came to New York on Saturday to meet with TRNC President Rauf Denktas and to convey the good wishes of the new government to Denktas who went through a heart surgery.
Turkish Ambassador to the U.S. Faruk Logoglu and Turkey's Permanent Representative to U.N. Umit Pamir came to New York in the same plane with Yakýs.
Yakýs visited Denktas in Columbia-Presbytarian hospital.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Yakýs said regarding the Annan's Cyprus plan that ''we believe that the territory line has to be corrected and the water sources have to be distributed in a more equal way in the plan.''
''We think that the plan is negotiable,'' said Yakýs.
When a Greek Cypriot journalist asked Yakýs if the Turkish government accepts the plan, Yakýs said that ''accepting it in legal and diplomatic jargon is one thing, negotiating it is another thing. We believe that the way to negotiation is open. At least we don't reject negotiation.''
Yakis said, ''we believe that the territory line should be corrected and the water sources should be distributed in a more equal way between the sides. There are several issues to be discussed.''
''I visited Denktas on behalf of the government. I informed Mr. Denktas about the contacts of Erdogan in the European capitals,'' Yakis noted.
Noting that he and Denktas exchanged views on the U.N. plan at the meeting, Yakis said that he explained his views to Denktas.
Yakis stated that Denktas also explained his views related to the issue and added that he and Denktas had the similar views on the Cyprus plan.
Yasar Yakis, who will meet with U.S. State Department Undersecretary for Political Affairs Marc Grossman on Sunday, will meet again with Denktas the same day.
Foreign Minister Yakis is expected to depart from New York on Monday.
