ANKARA - Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said late on Monday that ''headscarf issue should be solved in an atmosphere of compromise and with mutual confidence.''
Gul responded to questions in a program broadcast in private Kanal D channel.
Touching on headscarf issue, Gul said that there was such a problem in Turkey and went on saying, ''what is important is how this problem will be solved. We assume this understanding: This issue should be solved in an atmosphere of compromise and with mutual confidence. If you approach the issue by saying that 'I solve this and I win a victory', problems cannot be solved.''
Gul noted, ''we have to overcome such problems if we are to become a developed democratic country where fundamental rights and liberties are taken under guarantee and individual preferences are respected.''
Stating that they would act very carefully about headscarf issue, Gul said that they would not be in a move as if ''they had solved the issue.''
Gul added that they would solve this issue with mutual compromise in a way that would respect belief of everybody.
