Denktas: Presentation Of Map Was Not Right

LEFKOSA - President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said presentation of map in the solution plan of the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan was not right, yet noted that he would not refrain from continuing the negotiations.
Denktas, currently in New York for health reasons, told Bayrak Television that TRNC Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu made the necessary contacts, and that the document that was put forward should be examined well. Denktas said he examined the document in New York, and that he wanted to give the necessary messages.
Pointing out that he was in contact with the U.N. Secretary General Annan's Cyprus Special Envoy Alvaro De Soto, adding that he explained him the reason in delay of the response they would give to the plan.
When recalled that Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during his visit to TRNC pointed out that the plan could be negotiated, Denktas said, ''negotiating it does not mean accepting it. Naturally, this is a method, an approach. Instead of directly rejecting, you say what made you to reject it.''
Pointing out that a very big mistake was made regarded with territory issue, Denktas said he had told former U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali that he would make the negotiations end if he put the map, but that Boutros-Ghali did not listen to him.
Denktas said, ''I also told this to today's U.N. officials. I said the map should be left to the end to make the consultations continue and to reach a result. I could not make them listen. They also know that they would not lead anywhere with this map in the plan. But we will continue the negotiations and see what will happen.''
Denktas said his health gradually bettered, stressing that he would wait till his treatment ends.
Meanwhile, Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides said it was not possible for them to accept ''joint leadership'' formula that is in Annan's plan.
Clerides said they take the decisions on Cyprus issue jointly with Greece, adding that they did not act on their own.

TRNC PRIME MINISTER EROGLU: ''ANNAN'S PLAN SHOULD BE EXAMINED WELL''
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu said plan of the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, presented to the sides, should be examined well. Eroglu said they were about to complete the examination and that the necessary statement would be made afterwards.
Eroglu said the technical experts, who examined the plan, warned them to be careful against the traps.
Speaking to Bayrak Television, Eroglu said during his meeting with Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday, he had the opportunity to take up the stage reached on Cyprus issue, and the plan.
Eroglu said statements had been made on the U.N. plan before examination of it, and noted that some political parties and circles distorted the contents of the plan.
Eroglu said, ''as the technical experts examine the package, they see many traps, and realize that many aspects should be discussed and evaluated again and again.''
Eroglu said it would not be right to examine the plan in 24 hours and to make interpretations on it, adding that this plan should be examined well.
Pointing out that the TRNC government examined the plan, and about to complete their evaluations, Eroglu said the plan would be discussed in Executive Board of National Unity Party on Monday, and in the parliament on Tuesday.
