ISTANBUL - A person attempted to hijack a passenger plane belonged to Israel's national airline El Al which was bound from Tel Aviv to Istanbul late on Sunday.
El Al Flight 581 sent out a hijacking signal over northwestern province of Yalova as it approached Istanbul.
The plane landed at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport safely at 9.50 p.m.
Security guards aboard the plane captured 23-year-old Israeli Arab Tawfiq Fukra.
None of the 170 passengers on board the Boeing 757 was harmed.
The passengers said that Fukra armed with a pocket knife tried to storm into the cockpit, however, security guards aboard the plane rendered him ineffective.
Istanbul Police Chief Hasan Ozdemir said that a full investigation into the hijacking attempt was under way.
Fukra was detained and taken to the Provincial Directorate of Security for questioning.
