ANKARA - The unemployment rate increased to 9.9 percent for Turkey and to 14.7 percent for non-agricultural sector in July-September period of 2002.
The State Institute of Statistics announced the preliminary results of household labor force survey for the third quarter of the year.
According to the results, the unemployment rate was estimated to be 9.9 percent for Turkey, and it was estimated to be 14.7 percent for non-agricultural sector. These rates were 8 percent and 12.6 percent respectively in the same quarter of previous year.
The unemployment rate in the third quarter of 2002 was estimated to be 10.1 percent for male and 9.4 percent for female. However, the unemployment rate for urban areas was estimated to be 14 percent for total, 12.7 percent for male and 18.9 percent for female. In rural areas, this rate was estimated to be 4.6 percent for total, 5.9 percent for male and 2.6 percent for female.
19.3 percent of total unemployed persons lost their job while 23.9 percent of unemployed persons was the first time job seekers.
In the third quarter of 2002, the number of unemployed persons was estimated to be 2 million 373 thousand persons with an increase of 466 thousand persons, when compared to the results of the same quarter of previous year.
The unemployment rate of educated young people increased when compared to the results of the third quarter of 2001. It was estimated to be 31.1 percent. Unemployment, among educated young people was high in urban areas. The unemployment rate of the educated young people in urban areas was 33.1 percent for total, 30.5 percent for male and 36.8 percent for female in the thirdquarter of 2002. In rural areas, this rate was 25.4 percent for total, 22 percent for male and 34.5 percent for female.
According to the DIE, non-institutional civilian population in Turkey reached to 66 million 162 thousand persons with an increase of 998 thousand persons compared to the results of the third quarter of 2001.
When this number was examined by urban and rural areas, an increase of 1 million 216 thousand persons in urban areas (41 million 591 thousand persons), a decrease of 218 thousand persons in rural areas (24 million 571 thousand persons) were emerged. According to the results of the third quarter of 2002, 50.2 percent of the non-institutional civilian population was male and 62.9 percent of them were residing in urban areas.
In the third quarter of 2002, total employment was estimated 21 million 691 thousand persons with a decrease of 184 thousand persons, when compared to the results of the same quarter of previous year.
Non-institutional civilian working age population (15 years and over) was estimated to be 46 million 767 thousand persons in the third quarter of 2002 with an increase of 947 thousand persons when compared to the results of the same quarter of previous year. 49.8 percent of the non-institutional civilian working age population was male.
Persons not in labour force comprise 48.5 percent (22 million 703 thousand persons) of the non-institutional civilian working age population who is 15 years of age and over. According to the results of the third quarter of 2002, persons not in labour force increased 665 thousand persons compared to the same quarter of previous year.
